This site exists because most marine electronics information falls into one of two categories, and neither is much help to someone actually equipping a boat.
The first is manufacturer material, which is accurate about features and silent about limitations. The second is forum advice, which is rich in experience and inconsistent about whether the experience generalises.
What is missing in between is a systems view: what each sensor genuinely knows, where it fails, how the failures overlap, and how to design a boat where several technologies cover one another's blind spots.
#What this site is
A reference on navigation systems, written for Australian conditions. Australia has an enormous coastline containing both modern hydrographic survey and much older data, a radio framework that changed in 2025, Safety Equipment by State 2026: Australian Requirements">safety equipment requirements that differ by state, and a hydrographic office beginning its move to S-100 products. Advice written for European or North American waters does not map cleanly onto any of that.

It is not a substitute for a competent installer. A great deal of real-world performance comes from commissioning rather than specification, and commissioning is skilled work.
It is not a substitute for your judgement at sea. No guide knows your boat, your crew, or the water in front of you.

#The argument that runs through everything
If there is one thesis here, it is this: modern marine navigation is an information problem, not a GPS problem.
A bright chartplotter can present bad heading data beautifully. A precise GNSS fix can be plotted against a reef surveyed with far lower confidence. AIS can look reassuring while a small non-transmitting fishing vessel closes through rain. An autopilot can hold a course perfectly while steering toward deteriorating weather.
Which produces the recommendation that most of this site is an elaboration of: choose the display last. Inspect power, identify sensors, decide what needs independent backups, design the network, size the autopilot drive, choose radar and sonar for the actual mission, pick the ecosystem that integrates them — then pick a screen.
