Marine Chartplotter Buying Guide
Why the chartplotter should be the last thing you choose, what actually matters beyond processor speed and resolution, and how to match the ecosystem to the boat's radar, sonar and autopilot.
The chartplotter is the most visible part of a modern navigation system, and it should not be the first part selected.
A display shows information. It does not determine whether that information is reliable. Choosing the screen first is like choosing a car by its instrument cluster — the thing you look at is not the thing that does the work.
There is also a harder constraint. Radar imagery, detailed sonar and camera video travel over each manufacturer's own Ethernet, which means the display you choose determines which radar and which sonar you are permitted to buy for the next decade. Standard sensor data crosses brands freely; the expensive high-bandwidth sensors do not. See marine networks.
So the better selection process starts with:
- vessel mission — what the boat actually does most
- radar requirements
- sonar requirements
- autopilot architecture, driven by the steering system
- instruments
- network design
- existing equipment worth keeping
The correct MFD ecosystem then becomes much easier to identify, because most of the candidates have already eliminated themselves.
#Chartplotter versus MFD
A basic chartplotter displays:
- charts
- position
- routes
- tracks
- waypoints
A multifunction display can additionally integrate:
- radar
- AIS
- sonar
- autopilot control
- wind, depth and speed
- engine data and tanks
- cameras and thermal imaging
- digital switching
Most premium products in 2026 are MFDs, and the distinction now matters mainly at the budget end and on very small craft.
#What actually matters
Do not compare only processor speed and screen resolution. Those are the easiest numbers to publish and among the least predictive of whether you will like the thing at sea.
Ask instead:
- Is the screen readable in direct sunlight? Australian sun is not European sun
- Does it work with polarised sunglasses? Some displays go black at certain angles. Check before buying, not after
- Can it be operated while wet? Capacitive touch and salt water are an uneasy combination
- Are physical controls available if needed?
- Which radar family does it support? This is the decade-long commitment
- Which sonar systems, and which transducers?
- How deeply does it integrate with the autopilot you need?
- Can essential information remain visible in split screen?
- Is local support good from your home port?
- Can the system expand without replacing everything?
Questions 5 and 9 are the ones buyers regret skipping. A large share of real-world performance comes from commissioning, and commissioning requires someone competent within reach.

#Garmin
Key families: GPSMAP x3, GPSMAP 15x3 Ultrawide, GPSMAP 9000, GPSMAP 9000xsv.

The most sailing-specialised mainstream ecosystem — polars, laylines, true wind and sailing pilot logic in the core software rather than bolted on. Zeus SRX was announced February 2026 for large premium sailing yachts. See B&G.
#Raymarine
Raymarine launched Axiom 2 in March 2026. The family is especially compelling paired with Evolution autopilot, Quantum or Cyclone radar, FLIR thermal and cameras — bought as a system rather than piecemeal. See Raymarine.
#Simrad
NSS 4 combines a touchscreen, a rotary control and a keypad with an 8-core processor, strong sonar integration and HALO radar compatibility. The best helm input of the six at speed. See Simrad.

Viewing distance matters more than hull length. A 9-inch display at arm's length on a tiller-steered yacht is more legible than a 16-inch display across a wide flybridge.
#Why larger screens help
The real benefit is information density, not chart magnification. A 16-inch display showing one chart is doing a 9-inch display's job in more space.
Useful split screens:
- chart + radar — the offshore default
- chart + sonar
- chart + sailing data
- radar + AIS, in traffic
- chart + engine data, under power
A larger chart by itself is not the whole value proposition, and if the budget forces a choice between screen area and a second useful data source on screen, the second source usually wins.
#Ultrawide screens
Ultrawide displays make sense where horizontal helm space is generous.
Best applications: catamarans, centre consoles, motor yachts.
Potential disadvantage: less vertical chart area than a conventionally proportioned display of similar diagonal.
Buy ultrawide for layout, not fashion. On a wide helm pod the trade is usually right; on a narrow bulkhead it is usually wrong.
#Touch versus physical controls
Touch is excellent for chart work — panning, pinch-zoom, selecting objects.
Physical controls remain valuable when you are:
- wet
- heeled
- wearing gloves
- operating in rough water
- unable to look down
That last one is the serious case. At speed in a chop, a touchscreen requires you to look at the screen to hit anything. A rotary control or keypad can be operated by feel.
This makes hybrid products such as Zeus SR, NSS 4 and Axiom 2 Pro particularly attractive offshore, and the advantage is consistently undervalued in specification comparisons.

#One screen or two?
Two displays provide:
- a dedicated radar picture
- a dedicated chart
- operational convenience
- display redundancy
But if both share the same power circuit, the same network and the same GNSS source, they are not complete navigation redundancy. One breaker, one battery bank or one backbone fault removes both.

Before purchase, verify physically against the actual helm:
- cut-out dimensions
- rear clearance for the cable bundle
- cable bend radius — coax and Ethernet both degrade when forced
- sun-cover swing clearance
- wheel and throttle clearance through full travel
- viewing angle from a standing helm position
- service access to the back of the unit

Choose the ecosystem that best supports the boat's radar, sonar, autopilot, instruments and service needs. Then choose the screen — last, and probably smaller than you were planning.

What size chartplotter do I need?
Viewing distance matters more than hull length. As a guide: 7 to 9 inches on a 4 to 6 m trailer boat, 9 to 12 inches on a 30 to 38 ft yacht, 12 to 16 inches on a 38 to 48 ft yacht or offshore fishing boat, and 16 inches or more on a motor-yacht glass helm. For many 35 to 45 ft cruising yachts, 12 inches is the sweet spot.
Is touch screen or physical control better on a boat?
Touch is excellent for chart work. Physical controls remain valuable when you are wet, heeled, wearing gloves or operating in rough water. Hybrid products such as Zeus SR, Simrad NSS 4 and Axiom 2 Pro are particularly attractive offshore for exactly this reason.
Can I mix brands on one boat?
For standard NMEA 2000 data types, usually yes — a Garmin display with B&G wind and a third-party AIS works well. It becomes difficult when you expect cross-brand radar, sonar, camera control or autopilot commissioning. Choose one primary ecosystem, then integrate specialist devices around it.
Are two displays proper redundancy?
Not on their own. If both share power, network and GNSS source, they give operational convenience and display redundancy but not system redundancy. Add at least one navigation method that remains useful after a network or primary-power failure.
