Best Chartplotters Australia

There is no single best chartplotter, only a best ecosystem for a specific vessel and mission. Here are the 2026 picks, mission by mission, with the reasoning.

There is no best chartplotter. There is a best ecosystem for a specific vessel and mission, and the display is the part of it you happen to look at.

That is not a dodge. It follows from how the hardware works: radar imagery, detailed sonar and camera video travel over each manufacturer's own Ethernet, so the display you choose determines which radar and which sonar you are allowed to buy for the next decade. Standard sensor data crosses brands freely; the expensive high-bandwidth sensors do not. The networks guide covers why.

So choose the ecosystem from the boat's actual job, then choose a screen inside it.

#Best for dedicated sailing: B&G

B&G wins when the skipper genuinely uses the sailing data as navigation information rather than decoration — polars, laylines, true wind, sailing autopilot modes, performance targets.

The specialisation is real rather than cosmetic: the sailing features live in the core software and the autopilot logic, not in a bolt-on page.

Mainstream choice: Zeus SR. The strongest current fit for many serious sailing installations, and its hybrid touch-and-keypad control is exactly what you want wet and heeled.

Premium choice: Zeus SRX, announced February 2026, targeting large premium sailing yachts.

The cost: fishing sonar is not a priority. If the boat's second job is serious fishing, you will be compromising. See B&G marine electronics.

#Best all-round ecosystem: Garmin

Extremely difficult to beat for breadth. Displays, radar, sonar, autopilot, VHF with integrated AIS, satellite messaging, cameras and switching — from one supplier, with the widest Australian dealer coverage of the six.

Strengths: the most approachable interface of the six (a safety property on a boat with rotating or infrequent crew), strong radar, an outstanding fishing sonar catalogue, and genuine communications reach.

2026 was a busy year: Signal VHF in May including the 400 with integrated Class B AIS, LiveScope 2 in July, and SmartDrive in September — which for the first time makes Garmin a serious dedicated sailing-autopilot competitor within its published size and displacement limits.

#Best cruising-yacht integration: Raymarine

Raymarine's Axiom 2 launch in March 2026 refreshed the core platform, and the ecosystem is at its most compelling when the pieces are used together: Axiom, Evolution autopilot, Quantum 2 or Cyclone radar, FLIR thermal and cameras behaving as one designed system.

For a cruising yacht where the autopilot works hard, night entries happen, and you would rather have one coherent helm than best-in-class individual boxes, this is often the better whole system. See Raymarine marine electronics and B&G versus Raymarine.

#Best powerboat and fishing hybrid: Simrad NSS 4

NSS 4 combines touch, a rotary control and a keypad with a fast 8-core processor, strong sonar integration and HALO radar compatibility.

The control scheme is the point, and it is consistently undervalued. At 25 knots in a chop a touchscreen is unreliable input and forces you to look down; a rotary and keypad let you change range or move a cursor by feel. #Best radar-first premium choice: Furuno

TZtouchXL is compelling where the owner prioritises radar, serious sonar, satellite compass heading and offshore sensor performance over consumer-style polish.

#Best fishing-first value: Lowrance

HDS PRO with Active Imaging and ActiveTarget remains highly relevant to fishing boats, particularly smaller and medium craft, and delivers the most fish-finding capability per dollar of the six.

It is not my first choice as the primary ecosystem for a bluewater sailing yacht, where sailing instrumentation, autopilot capability and long-term offshore integration matter more. See Lowrance marine electronics.

#Screen size: an opinion

For many 35 to 45 ft cruising yachts, 12 inches is the sweet spot. Large enough for genuinely useful split screens — chart plus radar, chart plus instruments, chart plus sonar — without consuming the budget the sensors need.

The real benefit of a bigger screen is information density, not chart magnification. A 16-inch display showing one chart is doing a 9-inch display's job in more space.

And the trade that matters: I would rather install a good 9 or 12-inch MFD with Doppler radar, a transmitting AIS and an excellent heading sensor than spend most of the budget on a very large display fed by weak inputs. The cost guide sets out the full spending order.

Buy ultrawide for helm layout, not fashion — it trades vertical chart area for horizontal space, which suits catamarans, centre consoles and motor yachts and suits little else.

Compare complete Garmin, B&G, Raymarine and Furuno system architectures, not individual screens. At this level the radar, sonar, autopilot and camera integration is the purchase.

#Before you buy anything

Verify, physically, against the actual helm: cut-out size, rear clearance, cable bend radius, sun-cover clearance, wheel and throttle clearance through full travel, viewing angle from a standing position, and service access.

A display that fits on paper can still be unpleasant in the boat — and sunlight readability with polarised sunglasses is worth checking before installation rather than after.

Which chartplotter is best for a 40 ft sailing yacht in 2026?

B&G Zeus SR is the strongest current fit for many serious sailing installations, with Zeus SRX targeting large premium sailing yachts. If autopilot, radar, camera and thermal integration matters more than pure sailing instrumentation, Raymarine's Axiom 2 Pro S is an excellent alternative.

Garmin or Simrad for a mixed cruising and fishing powerboat?

Either works well. Garmin GPSMAP gives the broadest accessory ecosystem and the easiest interface; Simrad NSS 4 gives an excellent offshore-powerboat control interface with touch, rotary control and keypad, a fast 8-core processor and strong HALO radar and sonar integration. Let the transducer and radar requirements decide.

Is a huge screen worth the money?

Usually not at the expense of sensors. A good 9 or 12-inch display with radar, AIS and excellent heading beats a very large display fed by weak inputs. The real benefit of screen size is information density in split screens, not chart magnification.
