B&G Marine Electronics
The most sailing-specialised mainstream ecosystem, and the specialisation is real rather than cosmetic. Worth it if you actually use the data.
Most marine electronics brands will sell a sailing yacht the same system they would sell a powerboat, with a wind sensor added. B&G builds the other way around: the sailing features are in the core software and the autopilot logic, and everything else is arranged around them.
Whether that is worth paying for comes down to a single honest question: do you use the data?
#What the specialisation actually means
A B&G system treats wind as navigation information rather than decoration. That produces capabilities a general-purpose display does not have:
- Polars — your boat's expected speed at each true wind angle and speed, used live rather than as a reference table
- Laylines — the course on which you can make a windward mark on one tack, computed from wind, heading and performance
- SailSteer-style integrated views that put wind, laylines, tide and target angles in one picture
- Sailing autopilot modes that steer to apparent or true wind angle and handle tacks and gybes properly
- Start-line and race timing functions on the performance-oriented products
Every one of those depends on input quality. As the heading sensors guide explains, a heading error corrupts true wind, which corrupts laylines and polar targets. Buying B&G and siting the sensors badly wastes the specialisation.

Zeus SR's hybrid control — touch plus physical keys — matters more offshore than the specification suggests. Touch is excellent for chart work and much less excellent when you are wet, heeled and wearing gloves.
#Autopilot
H5000 provides advanced sailing-oriented control behaviour for performance and bluewater boats. NAC products suit mainstream cruising installations.
Both are pilot computers, which is the smaller half of the decision. The autopilot guide is blunt about this: the drive is the muscle, and an excellent computer cannot compensate for an undersized or badly mounted one.

- Performance cruising and racing. The clearest case
- Bluewater cruising yachts where the autopilot works hard and sailing efficiency affects the power budget — see sailing yacht navigation.
- Owners who trim actively and will use polar targets
- Catamarans sailed hard, where apparent wind angles change quickly
#Who should look elsewhere
- Anyone who fishes seriously. Sonar is not the priority. Garmin, Simrad, Furuno or Lowrance are better answers
- Motor yachts and power cruisers. Sibling brand Simrad is positioned for exactly that.
- Owners wanting thermal and camera integration as a centrepiece — Raymarine is more cohesive there.
- Boats where one supplier must cover everything including comms and switching — Garmin reaches further.
#The mixed-brand question
Because B&G, Simrad and Lowrance sit under Navico, some hardware crosses over — HALO radar in particular. Standard NMEA 2000 data mixes freely with any brand, so a B&G boat can carry third-party AIS, engine gateways and battery monitors without difficulty.
What does not mix is the high-bandwidth link: radar imagery, detailed sonar and camera control. Pick the ecosystem for those, then integrate specialists around it.
#Bottom line
If you genuinely sail, B&G is the ecosystem built for you, and Zeus SR is the strongest current fit for most serious installations. If sailing is something the boat does on the way to the fishing grounds, you are paying for depth you will not use.

Is B&G worth the extra over Garmin or Raymarine?
It depends entirely on whether you use the sailing data. If polars, laylines, true wind and sailing autopilot modes are part of how you actually navigate, B&G's specialisation is genuinely hard to beat and the answer is yes. If you mostly motor-sail coastal passages and value breadth, interface polish or fishing capability, you are paying for depth you will not use.
Zeus SR or Zeus SRX?
Zeus SR is the strongest current fit for most serious sailing installations, and its hybrid touch-and-physical control is exactly what you want when wet and heeled. Zeus SRX, announced February 2026, targets large premium sailing yachts — it is the right answer when the vessel and the budget are at that end of the market, not a general upgrade.
Which B&G autopilot should I choose?
H5000 for advanced sailing-oriented control behaviour on a performance or bluewater boat; NAC for mainstream cruising installations. As always, the computer is the smaller half of the decision — size the drive from displacement, rudder area and steering load, never from length overall.
Are B&G, Simrad and Lowrance the same thing?
They are sibling brands under Navico, sharing underlying platforms, the HALO radar family and much of the sonar technology. The positioning and software are genuinely different, though: B&G's sailing features do not appear on the Simrad or Lowrance products, and Lowrance's fishing features do not appear on B&G.
