B&G vs Raymarine

Two excellent cruising ecosystems that optimise for different things. One question decides it: do you sail the boat, or do you voyage in it?

These are the two ecosystems most often shortlisted against each other for a cruising yacht, and the comparison is genuinely close. Both make excellent displays with hybrid controls, both make proven autopilots, both make good solid-state Doppler radar.

They diverge on what the system is for.

#The one question that decides it

Do you sail the boat, or do you voyage in it?

Both are legitimate. A yacht that beats to windward for the pleasure of it, whose owner trims constantly and would actually look at a polar target, is a different machine from a yacht that motor-sails 1,200 miles up the Queensland coast with the autopilot on and the bimini up.

#Where B&G is clearly ahead

Sailing as navigation data. Polars used live rather than as a reference, laylines computed from wind and performance, integrated sailing views, start-line functions on the performance products. This is not a skin on a generic plotter — it is the product.

Sailing autopilot behaviour. H5000's wind-mode steering is more sophisticated. On a boat that sails long passages in wind mode, that is felt.

Focus. Nothing in the interface is there for a fishing boat.

The catch, from the heading sensors guide: all of it depends on input quality. Heading error corrupts true wind, which corrupts laylines and polar targets. B&G with badly sited sensors is B&G wasted.

#Where Raymarine is clearly ahead

Thermal and cameras. FLIR integration is the most cohesive of the six ecosystems. On a boat that runs at night or works around unlit craft, this is real capability — see night and poor-visibility navigation.

Whole-helm coherence. Axiom, Evolution, Quantum, FLIR and Raymarine instruments commissioned as one system, supported as one system, fault-found as one system. On a boat a long way from a dealer, that is worth more than a feature.

Sonar. Axiom 2 Pro RVM is a genuine dual-purpose option if the boat occasionally fishes.

Breadth. More options above and below the mainstream cruising band.

#Where they are effectively equal

  • Display quality and readability at comparable sizes
  • Radar, for a cruising yacht — HALO24 and Quantum 2 are both excellent solid-state Doppler radomes. See best marine radar.
  • Chart options and presentation.
  • The things that actually dominate performance: sensor siting, drive sizing, power integrity and commissioning. As the cost guide argues, these matter more than the badge.

#Worked recommendations

#35 to 40 ft performance cruiser, sailed hard

B&G Zeus SR, H5000 or NAC per drive requirements, HALO24, SOTDMA AIS.

#42 ft cruising yacht, long coastal passages, night entries

Raymarine Axiom 2 Pro S, Evolution, Quantum 2, a FLIR camera, SOTDMA AIS.

#45 ft bluewater cruiser, shorthanded, ocean passages

Either. Decide on autopilot drive margin and local support, not software. Then read navigation redundancy, because on this boat what survives a failure matters more than which brand failed.

#45 ft catamaran

Either, with the catamaran guide's warning: do not size the pilot from length overall.

#Neither, if…

The boat fishes seriously. Neither is a fishing ecosystem — go to Garmin, Simrad or Furuno.

#Bottom line

B&G if the sailing data is navigation data to you. Raymarine if you want the whole helm — pilot, radar, thermal, cameras — to feel like one machine. Both are right answers to different questions, and neither is a mistake.

Which is better for a 40 ft cruising yacht?

If you trim actively and would use polar targets and laylines, B&G Zeus SR. If you value a helm where the autopilot, radar, thermal camera and displays behave as one designed system, Raymarine Axiom 2 Pro S. Both are genuinely excellent for the boat — this is a question about how you sail it, not about which company makes better hardware.

Is Raymarine's autopilot as good as B&G's for sailing?

Evolution is well proven on cruising yachts and reliable in exactly the shorthanded offshore role that matters most. B&G's H5000 has more sophisticated sailing-specific behaviour — wind-angle steering logic, performance-oriented response. For most cruising couples the difference is smaller than the difference made by correct drive sizing, which dominates both.

Can I mix B&G instruments with a Raymarine display?

Standard NMEA 2000 data yes — wind, depth, speed and heading will cross. What will not cross is radar imagery, detailed sonar, camera control and autopilot commissioning, which travel over each manufacturer's own Ethernet. A mixed system tends to give you the weaker half of both sailing feature sets, so pick one ecosystem for the high-bandwidth sensors.

Which has better charts?

Both are strong and both support multiple cartography options — Raymarine LightHouse and C-MAP, B&G through C-MAP and Navionics. Presentation differs more than substance. The caution from the charts guide applies to both equally: richer presentation is not higher hydrographic certainty, and neither makes an old survey new.
