Raymarine's strongest argument is not any single product. It is what happens when you use several of them together.

A cruising yacht running Axiom 2, an Evolution autopilot, Radar Australia 2026">Quantum 2 radar, a FLIR camera and Raymarine instruments has a helm where everything talks to everything, commissioning is one coherent process, and the owner has one place to go when something misbehaves. That coherence is worth real money on a boat that crosses oceans.

#What Raymarine is genuinely best at

Autopilot and display integration. Evolution pilots are widely used on cruising yachts, and the integration with Axiom and Raymarine instruments is tight enough that commissioning, tuning and fault-finding are straightforward — which matters, because as the autopilot guide notes, the pilot is often the hardest-working system on a shorthanded boat.

Thermal and video. FLIR thermal and camera integration is the most cohesive of the six ecosystems. On a fast night-running vessel, or a boat working around unlit craft and moorings, this is a real capability rather than a feature list entry — see night and poor-visibility navigation.

Radar range coverage. Quantum 2 for cruisers, Cyclone open arrays for larger vessels, both solid-state with Doppler.

Chart presentation. LightHouse charts and the overall cartographic presentation are strong, with the usual caution from the charts guide: richer presentation is not higher hydrographic certainty.

The hybrid-control point is the same one the chartplotter guide makes about Zeus SR and NSS 4: touch is excellent for chart work, physical controls remain valuable when wet, heeled or gloved.

#Autopilot

Evolution, across drive types from mechanical linear to hydraulic pump. As always, size the drive from displacement, rudder area and steering load rather than from length.

#Radar

Quantum 2 — compact solid-state Doppler, the natural choice for Axiom-based cruising yachts. Cyclone — open-array solid state for larger vessels. Both compared in best marine radar.

#Sonar and cameras

Axiom 2 Pro RVM covers integrated sonar for owners who want one box doing navigation and fishfinding. FLIR thermal, plus fixed and PTZ cameras, cover the visual side.

  • Fishing-first boats. Lowrance, Simrad or Garmin are stronger.
  • Radar-first owners. Furuno still leads on pure radar and offshore sensor performance.

Raymarine is the answer when you want the whole helm to feel designed rather than assembled, and when autopilot, radar, thermal and cameras are all part of the plan. Buy it as a system — bought piecemeal, most of its advantage disappears.

Short answers to the questions this guide raises most often.

Is Axiom 2 worth upgrading to from Axiom?

It depends on what the existing system lacks rather than on the model year. Axiom 2, launched March 2026, refreshes the platform, and Axiom 2 Pro adds hybrid physical controls that are genuinely better offshore. If your current Axiom drives the radar, sonar and autopilot you need and the screen is readable, spend the money on sensors or autopilot drive margin instead.

How good is Raymarine for sailing?

Very good, without being category-leading. Evolution autopilots are well proven on cruising yachts and the whole helm is cohesive. For polars, laylines and sailing-specific pilot logic, B&G is still ahead — see the head-to-head comparison. For a cruising yacht where autopilot reliability, radar and cameras matter more than performance instrumentation, Raymarine is often the better whole system.

Quantum 2 or Cyclone?

Quantum 2 is a compact solid-state Doppler radome and the natural match for an Axiom cruising yacht — low windage, light, easy to mount. Cyclone is an open-array solid-state radar for larger vessels, where a narrower beam and better target separation justify the size, weight and installation. Most sailing yachts want Quantum 2.

Is FLIR thermal imaging worth fitting?

On a vessel that actually runs at night, it can materially help detect people, unlit boats, coastline and structures that radar resolves poorly. It complements radar rather than replacing it, and it does not remove the need for Doppler radar and a transmitting AIS. On a 6-knot cruiser that rarely moves after dark, radar and a heading upgrade come first.
