Furuno is the ecosystem that came to recreational boating from the commercial world rather than the consumer one, and the priorities show. The sensors are excellent, the radar processing is serious, and the interface asks a little more of you than Garmin's does.
For an owner whose first question is "how well does it see?", that is the right trade.

Radar. DRS-NXT belongs near the top of any radar-focused shortlist. Target Analyzer colours targets by relative motion, the tracking is sophisticated, and the family spans domes through to large open arrays. Sonar and fishfinding. A long heritage in commercial fishfinding, with the sensor quality and depth capability to match. For serious offshore work this is a real advantage.

Is Furuno radar really better?
For radar-focused owners, it belongs at the top of the shortlist. DRS-NXT's target analysis and tracking are sophisticated across the family, and Furuno's heritage in commercial radar is genuine rather than marketing. Whether it is better for you depends on whether radar is your first priority — on a Garmin or Axiom boat, a cleanly integrated Fantom or Quantum 2 will serve you better than a mixed-brand architecture, because radar cannot cross the high-bandwidth link between ecosystems.
Do I need a Furuno satellite compass?
Not on a conventional fibreglass coastal cruiser, where a well-sited solid-state magnetic sensor is enough. Furuno's satellite compasses earn their cost on steel and aluminium vessels, large catamarans, premium radar installations and any boat needing stable heading at zero speed — the cases set out in the heading sensors guide.
Is Furuno worth it for recreational fishing?
For serious offshore fishing, yes — the fishfinding and sonar heritage is deep and the sensors are excellent. For trailer boats and inshore fishing, Lowrance or Garmin deliver more capability per dollar with an easier interface, and the Furuno advantage never gets used.
