Editorial Standards and Method
The method behind the guides: how facts are sourced, how regulation is handled, how brand scores are derived, and what this site deliberately does not assert.
A reference site is only as useful as its honesty about where its statements come from. This page sets out the method so you can calibrate how much weight to give any particular sentence.
#Three classes of statement
Everything on this site falls into one of three categories, and they are written differently on purpose.
#1. Verifiable fact
Traceable to a primary source: a manufacturer's published specification, or an authority's published guidance.
These are stated plainly and, where the claim is specific or recent, attributed. "Garmin announced SmartDrive in September 2026, using a brushless linear actuator with integrated ECU and rudder feedback, and states compatibility for boats up to 45 ft within its published displacement limits" is a factual claim, attributed, with the qualifying clause left in.
#2. Engineering judgement
A conclusion drawn from physics, established practice or system design, rather than from a source that can be cited.
These are written so the reasoning is visible and you can disagree with it. "Choose the display last" is a judgement. So is "a well-installed 24-inch radome beats a larger antenna installed compromisingly." The argument is given each time rather than asserted.
Recommendations are always judgement, and every buying guide therefore also names who should choose something else.
#3. Regulation
Never paraphrased as authoritative.
Australian recreational Safety Equipment by State 2026: Australian Requirements">safety equipment requirements are set by each state and territory, marine radio licensing by ACMA, beacon registration and MMSI by AMSA, and chart currency by the Australian Hydrographic Office. All of them change.
So regulatory content here does three things and stops:
- describes the pattern the rules follow, which is stable and genuinely useful for planning
- explains the reasoning behind a requirement where there is one worth understanding — the compass-alongside-GPS rule being the clearest example
- points at the authority that can state the current position
It does not reproduce jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction equipment lists. A list copied here starts going out of date immediately and you would have no way of knowing which line had changed. See safety equipment by state.
#What this site does not claim
Hands-on testing. No product on this site has been tested by the publication. Guides describe design intent, physics and trade-offs; where a performance claim originates with a manufacturer it is attributed to them. This is a real limitation, and disguising it as review experience would be worse than stating it.
Personal sea-going credentials. The guides are an editorial project rather than a named individual's memoir, and no biography is offered because none could be evidenced. The method above is what is offered instead.
Laboratory measurement. The application-fit scores are judgements. They say so wherever they appear.
#How the brand scores work
The matrix on the brands comparison and chartplotter guide scores six ecosystems out of five across six application columns.
What it is: a structured summary of how well each ecosystem's published capabilities and product positioning match the engineering requirements of each use case.
What it is not: a measurement, a benchmark, or a substitute for reading the individual brand pages — Garmin, B&G, Raymarine, Simrad, Furuno, Lowrance.
The chart and the underlying table are both published, so you can see every figure rather than a derived ranking.
#Commercial independence
- No advertising
- No affiliate links
- No sponsored content or paid placement
- No manufacturer relationships
- No email capture, no trackers, no analytics
The site also does not reproduce manufacturers' logos or brand assets. The brand tiles are typographic, set in this site's own type and palette — a deliberate choice to avoid redistributing trademarked material.
#Currency and review
Every page carries a review date in its byline, and the same date appears as lastmod in the sitemap.
Content ages at very different rates:

2026 alone brought Axiom 2, Signal VHF, LiveScope 2, SmartDrive, Zeus SRX and NSS 4. A 2021 buying guide is materially out of date at the product level while its engineering chapters remain sound — which is exactly why the two are separated here.
#Corrections
Errors should be fixed rather than defended. The categories worth reporting:
- Factual error — a specification, date or attribution that is wrong
- Outdated product information — a model superseded or withdrawn
- Changed regulation — a rule or authority reference that has moved
- Broken reasoning — a judgement whose argument does not hold
- Broken links — including to authorities, which do reorganise
Corrections update the page and its review date. Where a correction changes a recommendation rather than a detail, the change is stated on the page rather than made silently.

The primary sources this site relies on are listed, with what each is authoritative for, on the sources page.
#Bottom line
Facts are sourced, judgements show their reasoning, regulation is pointed at its authority, nothing has been tested, no money changes hands, and every page tells you when it was last reviewed.

How do you decide what counts as a fact versus an opinion?
Three classes, handled differently. A verifiable fact is something traceable to a primary source — a manufacturer's published specification, an authority's published guidance — and is stated plainly. Where do the brand fit scores come from?
They are editorial judgements about application fit, derived from each ecosystem's published capabilities, product positioning and the engineering requirements of each use case — not from testing. That is stated on every page they appear on. They are useful for narrowing a shortlist and should not be read as measurements. The scale and the reasoning behind each brand's position are published on the brand pages.
Do you accept products for review?
No, and no product on this site has been tested by the publication. Guides describe what equipment is designed to do, what the physics permits, and what the engineering trade-offs are. Where a claim originates with a manufacturer it is attributed to them. This is a deliberate limitation and it is better acknowledged than disguised as hands-on testing.
How do you handle a page going out of date?
Every page carries a review date, shown in its byline and in the sitemap's lastmod. Product-level content ages fastest — 2026 alone brought Axiom 2, Signal VHF, LiveScope 2, SmartDrive, Zeus SRX and NSS 4 — while engineering principles age slowly. Regulation is handled by reference precisely so that it cannot silently go stale here.
