Value in fish-finding. HDS PRO with Active Imaging covers structure scanning and bottom definition at a price that leaves budget for a properly specified transducer — which, as the transducer guide insists, is where sonar performance actually comes from.
ActiveTarget live sonar. For anglers whose technique uses live imagery, this is a real capability rather than a feature.
Approachability on small boats. The interface and the physical products suit consoles where space, power and budget are all constrained — the situation described in trailer boat electronics.

#Where the value actually comes from
Two things make the price work, and they are worth naming because they explain the limits as well as the strengths.
Focus. Lowrance is not carrying the engineering cost of sailing instrumentation, offshore autopilot development, thermal integration or satellite communications. The development budget goes into sonar, and it shows.
Navico lineage. As a sibling of Simrad and B&G, Lowrance shares platform and sonar technology developed across the group. You are buying into a larger engineering base than the price implies — which is also why HALO-derived radar is available on larger fishing boats.
The corollary is the honest limit: what does not cross over is the sailing software and the offshore integration depth. Those live in the sibling brands on purpose.

#The budget argument, honestly
The cost guide makes a point worth repeating here: the two cheapest items on any electronics list — a charged handheld VHF and a registered distress beacon — buy more safety per dollar than any display upgrade.

Is Lowrance good enough for offshore fishing?
For much of it, yes. HDS PRO with a properly specified transducer handles the depths most Australian trailer and coastal fishing boats work, and Active Imaging plus ActiveTarget are genuinely strong. Where it starts to give way is at the top end — very deep water, radar-heavy operation, and installations wanting extensive engine, camera and autopilot integration, where Simrad, Garmin or Furuno reach further.
Lowrance or Garmin for a trailer boat?
Both are strong. Lowrance generally gives more fishing capability per dollar; Garmin gives a broader accessory ecosystem, an easier interface and better coverage if the boat also does general cruising. If fishing is the entire purpose of the boat, Lowrance is excellent value. If the boat has two jobs, Garmin is the safer pick.
What is the difference between Active Imaging and ActiveTarget?
Active Imaging is high-detail scanning sonar — down and side imaging that maps structure and bottom composition. ActiveTarget is live sonar, showing fish and lure movement in near real time. They answer different questions: one finds the structure, the other shows what is happening around it right now. Only buy ActiveTarget if your technique actually uses live imagery.
Why is Lowrance not recommended for sailing yachts?
Because the priorities are inverted. A bluewater sailing yacht needs wind and performance data, a robust sailing autopilot, low power consumption, solid-state Doppler radar and independent redundancy. Lowrance optimises for fish-finding. Its Navico sibling B&G is built for exactly the sailing case.
