Marine Electronics Brands Compared

You are not buying a screen, you are joining an ecosystem for a decade. Here is what each of the six brands is genuinely best at, and where each one costs you something.

At 25 knots a vessel covers 0.42 NM a minute, which is what makes radar refresh and heading quality disproportionately valuable.

Choosing marine electronics feels like choosing a screen. It is actually choosing an ecosystem, and the commitment is longer than most owners expect — the radar, sonar module, autopilot computer, instruments and cameras you buy alongside that display will still be there in ten years.

The reason the commitment binds is bandwidth. As the networks guide explains, standard sensor data crosses brands freely over NMEA 2000, but radar imagery, detailed sonar and video travel over proprietary Ethernet — Garmin BlueNet, Raymarine RayNet, Navico and Furuno networks. That is why you cannot put a Garmin radar on a Raymarine display.

So the practical rule: choose one primary ecosystem for the high-bandwidth sensors, then integrate specialist devices around it.

#B&G — if you genuinely sail

Choose it because: you use polars, laylines, true wind, sailing autopilot modes and performance data as navigation information rather than decoration.

B&G is the most sailing-specialised mainstream ecosystem, and the specialisation is real rather than cosmetic. The sailing features are built into the core software and the autopilot logic, not layered on.

  • Displays. Zeus S, Zeus S Ultrawide, Zeus SR, and Zeus SRX, announced in February 2026 and targeting large premium sailing yachts. Zeus SR is the strongest current fit for many serious sailing installations.
  • Autopilot. H5000 provides advanced sailing-oriented control behaviour; NAC products suit mainstream cruising installations.
  • Radar. HALO20+ and HALO24 with solid-state pulse compression and Doppler VelocityTrack. HALO24 is particularly attractive for serious offshore cruising where size and budget allow.

The cost of choosing it: fishing sonar is not the priority, and if the boat's second job is serious fishing you will be compromising.

#Garmin — the broadest ecosystem

Choose it because: you want strong capability across navigation, radar, sonar, communications and accessories, with the most approachable interface of the six.

Garmin's breadth is genuinely hard to beat. The GPSMAP x3, GPSMAP 15x3 Ultrawide, GPSMAP 9000 and GPSMAP 9000xsv families cover everything from mid-size cruisers to premium sportfishers, and the accessory ecosystem extends well beyond navigation.

2026 was a busy year:

  • Signal VHF radios launched in May 2026, including Signal VHF 400 with integrated Class B AIS
  • LiveScope 2 launched in July 2026 with improved resolution, coverage and noise reduction
  • SmartDrive was announced in September 2026 for compatible sailboats and catamarans, using a brushless linear actuator with integrated ECU and rudder feedback, with Garmin stating compatibility for boats up to 45 ft within its published displacement limits.

That last one matters. It makes Garmin a materially more serious sailing-autopilot competitor than it was, and it should now be compared directly against established B&G and Raymarine options.

The cost of choosing it: B&G still leads on deep sailing instrumentation, and on a pure racing or performance-cruising boat that gap is real.

#Raymarine — the most cohesive cruising package

Choose it because: you want chartplotter, autopilot, radar, thermal and cameras to behave as one designed system.

Raymarine launched Axiom 2 in March 2026, refreshing the core platform. The ecosystem is at its most compelling when the pieces are used together:

  • Axiom and Axiom 2 Pro displays, with Axiom 2 Pro RVM adding strong integrated sonar
  • Evolution autopilots, widely used on cruising yachts
  • Quantum 2 compact solid-state Doppler radar, and Cyclone open arrays for larger vessels
  • FLIR thermal imaging and video integration

For a cruising yacht where autopilot, radar, cameras and thermal all matter, the helm is unusually coherent.

The cost of choosing it: fishing-first features are not the focus, and the sailing instrumentation is very good rather than category-leading.

#Simrad — powerboats and offshore fishing

Choose it because: the boat is a motor yacht, power cruiser or offshore sportfisher and you want a serious offshore control interface.

NSS 4 is the current flagship recreational platform, combining touch, a rotary control and a keypad with a fast 8-core processor, strong sonar integration and HALO radar compatibility. The hybrid control scheme is exactly what you want when the boat is moving and your hands are wet — the argument made in the chartplotter guide.

Paired with HALO radar, including the HALO 2000 and 3000 open arrays on larger vessels, it is a strong offshore package.

The cost of choosing it: sailing features are not a priority. On a cruising yacht that genuinely sails, B&G is the sibling brand you want.

#Furuno — radar and sonar depth

Choose it because: radar performance, serious sonar and offshore sensor quality matter more to you than consumer-style interface polish.

Furuno's reputation is built on professional and commercial credibility, and it shows in the sensor families. TZtouchXL is a strong premium platform, and DRS-NXT radar belongs near the top of any radar-focused shortlist, with sophisticated target analysis and tracking across the family. Satellite compasses and serious fishfinding round it out.

The cost of choosing it: the interface is less immediately intuitive than Garmin's, and the recreational accessory ecosystem is narrower.

#Lowrance — fishing value

Choose it because: you fish, the budget is finite, and you want the most fish-finding capability per dollar.

HDS PRO with Active Imaging and ActiveTarget remains highly relevant to fishing boats, particularly smaller and medium craft. It is an excellent fishing-first platform.

The cost of choosing it: it is not a first choice as the primary ecosystem for a bluewater sailing yacht, where sailing instrumentation, autopilot capability and long-term offshore integration matter more than sonar features.

#The criterion most buyers underweight

Local support. Commissioning an autopilot properly, aligning radar, diagnosing an NMEA 2000 fault or getting a warranty repair turned around all depend on someone competent being reachable from your home port.

Given how much of a system's real-world performance comes from commissioning rather than specification, a brand with strong local capability can be the better practical choice even against a marginally superior product.

#How to actually decide

  1. Define the mission honestly — what the boat does most, not what you hope it will do
  2. Identify the high-bandwidth sensors that mission needs: radar type, sonar type, camera and thermal requirements
  3. Identify the autopilot architecture the steering system requires
  4. Shortlist the ecosystems that do those three things well
  5. Check local dealer and installer support for each
  6. Then, and only then, choose the display

That is close to the reverse of how most people shop, and it is the order the refit guide recommends for the same reason.

#Bottom line

All six brands make good products. The question is not which is best but which is best at the specific job your boat does — and whether you can get it properly commissioned and supported where you keep the boat.

Which marine electronics brand is best overall?

There is no single answer, because the brands optimise for different missions. Garmin has the broadest recreational ecosystem and the most approachable interface; B&G is the most sailing-specialised; Raymarine is the most cohesive cruising package when you use its autopilot, radar and cameras together; Simrad is strongest for powerboats and offshore fishing; Furuno leads where radar and sonar performance dominate; Lowrance is outstanding fishing-first value. Match the brand to the boat's mission rather than looking for a winner.

Can I mix marine electronics brands?

For standard NMEA 2000 data — position, heading, wind, depth, engine data, AIS, tank levels — yes, and mixed systems work well. It becomes difficult when you expect cross-brand radar, detailed sonar imagery, camera control or autopilot commissioning, because those travel over proprietary Ethernet. Pick one primary ecosystem for those, then add specialist devices around it.

Are B&G, Simrad and Lowrance the same company?

They are sibling brands under Navico, which is why they share underlying platforms, the HALO radar family and much of the sonar technology. They are positioned differently and the software is genuinely tailored: B&G for sailing, Simrad for powerboats and offshore fishing, Lowrance for fishing value. Shared hardware lineage does not mean the sailing features appear on the fishing product.

Does dealer support matter when choosing a brand?

In Australia, considerably. Commissioning an autopilot, aligning radar, diagnosing a network fault or getting a warranty repair done all depend on local capability. A brand with a strong installer near your home port can be a better practical choice than a marginally superior product supported from the other side of the country.
